Summary Description:
  • Supervises employees and operations of the Inventory Control Department and coordinates purchase, markup, sale and disposal of merchandise with the dealership managers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Purchases Merchandise
    • Purchase merchandise for resale by the dealership.
    • Inspects, and appraises merchandise offered for sale to determine value and yield.
    • Selects and orders merchandise from showings by manufacturing representatives, or purchases merchandise on the open market for cash, basing selection on nature of dealership clientele and expected demand for specific stock.
    • Coordinate all purchases with needs and expectations of General Merchandise, P&A, Service, and Sales Managers.
    • Review all stock orders to ensure a fast moving, balanced inventory of Parts & Accessories and General Merchandise.
    • Review monthly sales reports to project future inventory needs, maintain sufficient quantities of stock to support demand, and acceptable inventory turn ratio(s).
  2. Management
    • Employ sound management practices to ensure merchandise is properly received, accounted for, tagged properly and made available for sale on a timely basis.
    • Maximize return on investment of inventory.
    • Grow the volume of Parts & Accessory and General Merchandise sales.
    • Supervise and maintain an accurate up-to-date inventory management & control system.
    • Become familiar and efficient with all phases of the computer system required for service and parts management.
    • Establish procedures for ordering, receiving, logging into inventory, tagging, and selling all merchandise.
    • Ensure employees keep a clean and orderly department.
    • Maintain budgeted revenue and expense objectives.
    • Develop advertising & promotional campaigns for merchandise in conjunction with General Merchandise, P&A, Sales & Service Departments.
    • Provide reports to Dealer Principal or General Manager, as requested.
    • Occasionally assist staff when needed.
    • Attend training sessions to keep current with General Merchandise and P&A merchandising & inventory control issues.
  3. Customer Service
    • Point out any sales, specials, or new merchandise to staff and customers.
    • Handle customer complaints reasonably, showing empathy and a positive attitude, and demonstrate our commitment to “Make Things Right”.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Establish departmental work schedule, balancing the workloads of all employees.
    • Establish job assignments for all Inventory Control employees within their skill level.
    • Set policies and procedures for Inventory Control department.
    • Manage employee performance (evaluate and council).
    • Assist Dealer Principal or General Manager with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and firing employees.
    • Maintain records of all employee performance reviews.
    • Provide training for all Inventory Control employees (seminars; workshops; P&A sales, inventory mgmt., etc.)
    • Ensure all Inventory Control personnel maintain their parts qualification(s). (i.e. P.A.C.E. etc.)

Qualifications & Job Requirements:
  • Five years progressive experience with retail sales and inventory management.
  • Knowledge and experience with servicing of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and other products sold by the dealership, or the demonstrated ability to quickly learn them.
  • Experience with Point-of-Sale and Parts & Service management computer software or the ability to quickly learn due to general knowledge & experience with computers.
Physical Demands:
  • The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
  • Occasionally required to bend, stoop, crouch, reach, and lift 40 lb. of material
Working Conditions:
  • Is potentially exposed to battery acid, gasoline, chemical cleaning materials or other toxic materials commonly found in a motor vehicle service department.
  • Occasionally, exposed to exhaust fumes or other airborne particles.
